Self  Portrait ~ Lotus  Shoes

The story behind it is difficult to explain. The girl is wearing Lotus Shoes, an ancient Chinese custom, in which a little girls feet are painfully bound at a young age and twisted into a deformed shape to fit into very tiny shoes. Both shoes in this painting are different for a reason. I guess they represent the many roles that we are forced to play out and the expectations of society that is forced on you.
She isn't wearing anything from the waist-down, which is an explicit exposure of "woman
